Chapter History

Jewel Charles Henry Chapman said it best “We must never lose sight of the fact that we must take part in the development, not only of ourselves but of all humanity.” This is just the beginning of the many things to come the Eta Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

In 2010, with that same sentiment of development and growth, a group of brothers had the vision to bring an alumni chapter to Southeast Arkansas. Over the years, the idea and possibility of an alumni chapter begin to grow. During the summer of 2014, a group of brothers agreed to be a part of the submission for a new alumni chapter in Southeast Arkansas.

In April of 2015, Brothers Arlando Wilson, Robert Sparks, Justin Carbage, and Christopher Allen (Fantastic Four) worked diligently through the night to ensure the accuracy and completion of the 50+ page application.  After the completion, it was submitted to then District Director, Brother James McFadden, who also played a crucial role in the re-chartering of the chapter.

On Tuesday, August 4, 2015, at the National Board meeting then Southwestern Regional Vice President Brother Maurice Gipson’s motion to approve the application to relocate the Eta Upsilon Lambda chapter from Odessa, Texas to Monticello, Arkansas was approved. Thus, the vision became reality. The 14 re-charter members of the Eta Upsilon Lambda chapter came from all walks of life and various occupations (i.e. high school educators and administrators, college educators, cooperate America, a CEO, a physician, and non-profit directors). However, they all share one common goal, which is the betterment of Alpha and the communities and citizens of Southeast Arkansas.

Since our founding on December 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African Americans and people of color around the world. Jewel Henry Arthur Callis stated in 1946 that “The chief significance of Alpha Phi Alpha lies in its purpose to stimulate, develop, and cement an intelligent, trained leadership in the unending fight for freedom, equality, and fraternity. Our task is endless.”
